The service and food was good. The attendants were very considerant.
There was no enforcement of the boarding line. Those who formed a single line where instructed had to wait as 2/3 of the passengers made a mad dash to push their way to the front.
Video screen, power outlet, and window shade did not work properly in my seat on this brand new Dreamliner. Very disappointing. Especially for a 14 hour flight.
The bathroom was filthy and needed to be hosed down, and there was no soap or paper towels left by halfway through the trip.
The plane was uncomfortable, the seats looked unsafe, the flight was overcrowded with many crying babies, the food was terrible. Turbulence caused the flight to take an hour longer, which was even more excruciating.
China Southern's economy seats are spacious for legroom and seat width and the entertainment system is well stocked with movies/TV shows/music. Some entertainment systems will also com with a USB port to charge your device (if it's allowed to be used). All seats come with pillow and blanket to keep you warm throughout the flight.
Any mobile devices that can be used as a cell phone are not allowed to be on or used while on board the flight. This includes mobile phones in flight mode (China Southern explained to me that this is Chinese law), so don't expect to do anything with your mobile phone which means you're basically using their entertainment system. They will stop and tell you midflight to turn off your phone.
Food was horrible, no soap in the bathrooms, and boarding/deboarding in Guangzhou was a test of patience. Having been through Guangzhou twice, despite there being multiple gates for planes to pull into for arrival, they'll always deplane you to the tarmac where buses will be waiting. They'll then drive you to an arrival's terminal where you're forced through a long line that leads to a China Southern desk for them to stamp your boarding pass to wait for your next flight. This line was 30 minutes long for our plane alone and increased as more arrived. Boarding was the same where you get on a bus, stand for 10-15 minutes while they drive you to a plane that was for whatever reason was attached to another gate that no one had access to and you've climbing stairs to board again.
The airport itself is devoid of many food or coffee shops and what's available is expensive and of low quality/taste. Expect to see endless construction, many unclean bathrooms where the toilet seats don't even fit the toilet they've been attached to, and lack of soap in the bathrooms.
The KLM staff that were assigned to this flight were incompetent. After telling them I was flying with Etihad and I had a 30kg limit the told me to unpack my bag to reduce them to 23kg. I did this 3 times, and then at final weighing they figured out I was right and that I could board with 30kg. Morons!
I found the crowded squashed seating very uncomfortable, , the 380 from Dubai to UK was wonderful, the relaxed atmosphere was great, more leg room, and the staff were extremely pleasant, not sure I want to fly in a 777 again terribly claustrophobic .
Traveled front Málaga to Los Ángeles and overall the experience was great. The crew was very polite and helpful, the seats have more room than other flights we have been in and the main course meals were very well done. The Moscow airport was very well signaled and super well taken care of. Really easy to find your way around.
The not so awesome part was that the entertainment, as in movies and so on, are only offered in English or Russian. That was it. (My daughter is writing the review for me). My English is just ok and I was pretty bored. Also, in neither flight were we offered snacks. I thought that was strange. Especially in a twelve hour transatlantic flight.
For travel on an 11 hour flightnon economy,
I would expect to have water or drinks offered on that small tray about maybe once an hour at minimum. We had to ask every time we wanted water or when the meals were served they weren't served with wine or water so we had to ask for that. It got to us about 20-30 min later. The service was terrible to say the least. I realize that we were in economy and not all classes are treated equal, but some water offered or wine during a meal isn't too much to ask.
Not sure whether it was because my flight was short haul, but the plane didn't have in-seat entertainment system (i.e. TV screen for movie watching). The first half of my journey was delayed by 1.5 hours, which meant that I had to rush from the gate I landed in (after the lengthy airport bus ride from the plane to the gate) to my departure gate for my connecting flight, which was already on final call. I found out after my journey that TK is apparently notorious for its flight delays.
