The patio and the room only. Hotel too old and they want to exhibit a class that they may have in the 50's but not on 2016.
Nice. and comfortable. Far from the city
convenience to business meetings no
The personal is excellent ,Francisco,Hermes ,Mariel at the restaurant, the cleaning ladies ,is amazing how a hotel with over 50 years still in very good shape with an excellent service The city of Santo Domingo is growing a lot around this hotel
Great quality. Rooms had a decent view, balcony area, and great showers! Customer service and checkin and check out line were painfully slow. Twenty minutes or more for each with only one or two customers and one representative each time.
the staff was very professional and knowledgable, room service was impeccable. during my stay dominican moda(fashion) was been stay at the hotel which was rather exciting. my only complaint was the hotel restaurant that added the 26% tax which cause me to leave a tip until i eat at other establishments and discovered that the tip is included in the 26%. other places broke it down tax - 16% and the tip - 10%. its very misleading when the hotel restaurant combine both.
Location, beds where comfortable, parking, very luxurious lobby Service allthought fast responding
The worse. I had a reservation for a double bed. Got there and was only one bed. Front desk lady didn't"t try to help.
Very convenient. Restaurant, bank and business center are in the hotel. Bilingual desk workers. I was double charged for my first night despite paying when I booked it online from Booking.com. I discovered the double billing after the fact (no signed receipt). I was also charged by the hotel for a taxi fare that I paid cash directly to the driver. Again, no signed receipt. They just do this stuff after the fact. I have an email pending with them but no response. I will be disputing these charges with my credit card company soon if no response is heard.
Hotel with style, charm, professionality and a lot of history. Comparable to the Hotel Nacional in La Habana. I thoroughly recommend the hotel Occidental El Embajador. Active Hotels has proven to be an excellent and informative on-line booking service.
Brand new rooms
stay was plesent none
Staff was helpful and friendly. Food was satisfactory in the dinning facility. Check in and check out was organized. Parking is limited and it doesn't matter if you are a guest or local casino patron. When I checked in the front desk said I didn;t have a reservation, then said it was for only one day not two as my form indicated. I received my two days without problem.
Nice large pool. Breakfast was good. Filthy. Was 5 stars 30 years ago, now 2. But if you only pay a 2 star price, it's ok.
the breakfast The bed,The sheets and the towers
Decent value Lack of bar service around the pool area at night. Rooms need refurbishing
They ripped me off... I had a friend come in the morning at 10am to pick up some stuff and say hello - They charged my Credit Card an extra $50 for having my friend come to my room for 20 mins!! Unreal
Location was convenient. Facilities were old as well as linens, technology, etc.
Good location; good breakfast; excellent AC in rooms. The beds were very comfortable. This property is priced well. Cockroaches in room 1st night; poorly trained staff - terrible customer service skills. Internet service was intermittent.
For "Santo Domingo" this hotel is fairly priced for it's star rating. It's an older building, but recently renovated and redesigned inside. The lobby and rooms are modern with new baths (CAUTION: slippery shower tiles!). The rooms and public areas are clean. Even though the hotel is facing a main avenue (27. Febrero), the rooms are surprisingly quiet. I know Santo Domingo well, the location is "OK" if you just stay overnight or are OK with taking a taxi to most everything. There are NO good dining opportunities besides the hotel restaurant. The two malls at "walking distance" are some of the older malls and only have food courts and the better of the two may be too far a night. The hotel restaurant is food wise OK. Sadly the staff is too busy checking their messages on their cell phones and discussing them with each other. I had to get up from my table twice. Getting some coffee and desert after dinner, took 15 mins to get a waiter. Another 30 mins after TWO warnings (the last one ALOUD across the room offering to either bring the coffee and pastery in one more minute or the Chef... 2 mins later we finally got the coffee and pastery). Breakfast buffet is "OK" but again the "service" is lacking training and supervision. Storing bags for a few hours after check out is interesting again. The desk manager has a room for it, but no clear process, has to find some paper and scribble on it. Checkout is another point of discussion. People checking out before us criticized and questioned the transparency and clarity with which the credit card "security hold" was being handled. This is typical in Dominican Hotels! My advice is NOT to use any extra services or pay them cash against a receipt. So that the deposit/hold/freeze can simply asked to be canceled. While there were 3 people at the front desk, only one was handling customer flow. The manager seemed busy with himself and an other "customer assistant" was very busy ignoring customers. All in all, it seems there needs to be training, training, training and supervision. While the rooms are fairly freshly renovated, some of the materials used are not commercial grade, and some are just not appropriate or safe, which is typical for Latin America. The shower floor tiles are not meant for wet areas and are extremely slippery (a rubber mat is included, USE IT!). The room furniture is already showing signs of suffering from the humidity (electrical power in the DR is very expensive, so they turn the AC off when nobody is using the room.... composit board can't handle the humidity, and I am afraid it won't age well under commercial use and abuse). At our room's bath room entry there is an un-framed person-sized mirror FLOATING on pins. Anybody falling, or leaning on the mirror will break it and may be badly hurt. Keep in mind, weather you are American or what ever you are, the DR has no liability laws like the US. So use caution... not just at this hotel!
Great location for business. Very modern facility. NFC activated elevator and the room gains power with your room key. Staff is very welcoming and eager to help. Internet works, specially in the dinner up stairs. Beds sheets are clean. Through the room, there are well placed complimentary water bottles, including one in the bathroom and several more in the small refrigerator. Room has a kitchenette, coffee machine and towel robes. Spacious & modern bathroom with beautiful fixtures and hot water. Overall, rooms look very modern, staff is very friendly, location is pristine, Continental Breakfast is very good and the view from the dinner is wonderful. If you're looking to spend a night or two near the city, this can go on your list for up to $80/night. Unclear and confusing entrance to the hotel from the main street. Night staff is not trained as well as the daylight staff. Staff would not inform of the room key operations (NFC). Internet is slow in the rooms and cuts off very often. Beds are lower than expected and the room isn't as clean as it might look. The chair of the desk is kind of uncomfortable to work on it as it is not a desk chair but one of those plastics with metal you would use at a party. I found several instances of long hair, apparently from previous guests on the carpet. The bathroom had stains on the floor and there were residues of someone who probably threw up near the lower left side of the bathroom door. Also, the beautiful sink fixtures were in need of a dry cloth swipe and the shower head had mold and water residues accumulated on it. Although bathrooms are modern and spacious, the shower glass that protects the water from flooding the floor, is too short, so water do goes out into the bathroom floor. In all, this hotel has the infrastructure to be a very good little gem but small management details need to be addressed first. Just then, it'll be worth more than $80 per night.

Location and breakfast
Even do I've prepaid my room when I arrived short after mid night they confirm they had my reservation but they gave my room to some one else and hotel was completely full
Quaint Clean Attentive staff Deliciouso breakfast! We had a junior suite on the main floor. The traffic noise woke us up on several occasions. Get a room on a higher floor TV was almost un watchable due to problems with the color. I reset it to the factory settings but no luck. AC was either full on or off. No in-between.
gorgeous building, interior, and courtyard design. it really is unique and mazelike; i was smitten. (i'm from california so i'm floored by anything > 100 years old.) décor is like a regal columbus-fanboy/conquistador-chic, the zealotry of which i found somehow both zinn-esquely uncomfortable and museum-patron aesthetically pleasing. our room had tons of space, an antechamber with a few couches, a great bathroom (jet tub!, separate shower, separate toilet, bidet), an adorable relic of a pc with a 3.5" floppy drive, decent wifi (got dropped a few times but it was reasonably fast compared to what i'd seen in other cafés... just don't plan on playing an fps, etc.). we had the 5-crown room which i wouldn't normally spring for; there just wasn't vacancy in other rooms: it was the perfect hideaway to recharge and relax after walking around all day. so comfy :3 the location is perfect for exploring the zona colonial. my bf appreciated the a/c, which was very effective. nothing too bad, but staff was just okay, not super attentive and not particularly helpful when i had issues, i wouldn't consider them outright rude or anything though. e.g. -- i asked for a first aid kit or a bandage etc (in spanish) when my bf cut his foot and they just kinda shrugged and stared, so i just had to go outside and look for a pharmacy. -- i asked for the balcony door to be unlocked and they just never got around to it for the entire duration of my stay, etc. the free/not-free breakfast debacle: like another reviewer, i also was kind of confused when at checkin they said i had to pay for breakfast (the description said it was included). i chalked this up to an inaccurate description sent to the various hotelerie sites, and just assumed i'd pay for it a subset of the days, but then at checkout they didn't charge me for any of my breakfasts... so eh? if i had known it was actually included instead of hearing conflicting information i would have eaten breakfast there 100% of the time and saved some money : \ a lot of these might just be cultural differences, which is why i wanna reiterate that it wasn't too bad... i just wouldn't call it amazing service as i'd heard described in other reviews.
Hotel Palacio is a standing work of art. A very simple hotel filled with a consistent colonial homage throughout. The respectful Traveller will enjoy its location and proximity to authenticity. The bright light outside my door was annoying at night.
I loved the pool I didnt like the poor customer service at front desk, rude & unprofessional.
Nice rooms good beds nice bar and restaurant Noisy street noise along highway
Hotel location is great, walking distance to everything. The pool is clean. Rooms are clean and well taken care of. Barcelo Hotel now offers gym membership and access to the pool to locals. Those who buy membership to the gym also are allowed to use the pool area thereafter. I am pretty sure that many local residence obtain gym memberhip just to be able to use a pool.. Well, this is a huge incinvenience for visitors and guests of the Barcelo Hotel. The day we arrived, te pool was full of local teenagers who were cursing, making a lot of unnecessary noise, inappropriately making out in the pool and behaving in a very obnoxious matter. There was no security nor anyone from hotel management around to observe and to correct the situation. To Barcelo Management: if you want and need to have a repetitive business, you must either ban te local visitors from using a pool or have someone to observe the disipline in your pool area. a
upon checking out I was approached by staff about missing towels, they actually dragged me back up to the room to count the towels; when I checked in there was one bath towel in the room, I requested more towels and they gave my 2 additional bath towels and 1 hand towel, which I left in the room; I even opened my bag to let them look and after finding no towels the be grudgingly let me go
The bed was really comfy. The pool was nice. The room key has to be inserted in order for the air and lights to work, which is inconvenient. While showering, the water seeps through and floods the bathroom. There is no free wifi. The breakfast was not worth it's expensive price. The fan makes a sudden and loud noise. The cleaning service knocks on your door 3 times a night to check up on things. The gym was really hot and under construction. There were pigeons that would get in the pool. No calls can be made (not even local calls) unless a credit is paid prior. The toilet wouldn't flush and maintenence had to be called everyday to fix it. Things would be moved or gone missing after the room was cleaned.
I have a hard time finding solutions Nobody couldn't help me
Clean and comfortable They charge per guest. I was traveling with my two kids and they charged me extra for each.
The rastrillo architecture, excellent facilities and service, and outstanding Colonial Zone location. The breakfast buffet was expensive.
Beautifullly decorated modern hotel! My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by this beautiful hotel in the colonial section of Santo Domingo. Staff was very attentive. No complaints here. Any problems I had were taken care of so quickly I don't even remember what they were.
No complaints...everything is perfect.
I am so happy to find a hotel of this caliber in Santo Domingo.....I will return again and again! The food, the service, the room, location for walking, everything was perfect. There is nothing to not like. Ok maybe a small desk in the room would be nice....but there is a business center.
I loved how luxurious the hotel was. Everyone as accommodating and you felt like you were in a chiq location. The pool is amazing and the views are wonderful. You can hear everything through the walls. It was difficult to feel like it was intimate.
The architecture and plant integration.
Good breakfast, IF AND ONLY IF you get the free breakfast in your reservation. Otherwise, it's $10/person + taxes (18%) and that is way too expensive. 1. No refrigerator 2. Depending on the package, you MAY or MAY not get breakfast. The first three days I paid $113/night and I had breakfast. I renewed a 4th day for $140 and I didn't get the breakfast. 3. For 2 people, they only give 1 complimentary bottle of water. Each additional bottle is $1.20. For me the deal-breaker was the breakfast and the lack of refrigerator. I understand that the last day I mistakenly selected the wrong reservation (which had no breakfast), but considering that I had spent over $500 for 4 days, the least they could do was throw in the free breakfast. Due to the sneaky way they hide the breakfast option, I will not be staying there again.
Nice staff- reasonably clean. Not at all luxurious. Had to request towels and some basics daily. Very small rooms. Terrace is nice. Good if you need a place to sleep and won't be spending much time on the property. Friendly staff. Good price Two small towels daily- no hand towels, wash clothes, etc. small small rooms. Bed not great. Sheets not great. Shower did not have hot water some days.
Hi! , We love everything in there, we feeling like our own home,. Thanks you Oh! the meals, you have to make some changes in the menu, like Dominican foods sometimes.
Good service Location is close to historic center Room was some short Taxi from/to airport is $40 (30 minutes)
The view was outstanding and the staff were very attentive. The facility was nice, but there were a few issues with the conference rooms, electricity and water issues. The rooms were just ok. The decor is very basic and one of my colleagues complained that she felt a bit claustrophobic in her room. We tried to hook up the computer to the tv via a cord-- and the hotel only has one remote control (for the entire hotel) that changes the inputs on the tv. The prices for the buffets/food were ridiculous. $35 for lunch plus 28% in taxes. This includes the 18% ITBIS and does not include tip.
Gorgeous hotel in a great location of Santo Domingo. The rooms were beautiful and spacious and the staff/customer service was the best I have seen in a long time. The two main negatives were the food and bathroom. They claim no one has ever had this issue before and they seemed pretty shocked at the situation so I will give them the benefit of the doubt, but the showers that we experienced did not drain. The first room they gave is the shower flooded the bathroom. They were kind enough to give us a new took but the next morning when we went to shower again the same thing happened. As for the breakfast. It was served cold as if they scraped the leftovers of a previous guests plate onto a new plate to serve it to us so that it wouldn't be thrown out.
kindness, efficiency, very good food
Location room are small, bed is uncomfortable, they have a discotec on first floor and you are able to listen the music even if you are in the 4 floor until 3-4 am so you are unable to rest, staff with some exceptions are not friendly at all, bathroom is not good that's why they don't have pictures of there bathroom online, elevator if there is 2 people in there you are crowed, parking is uncomfortable I wouldn't recmmended
I liked the restaurante service and the breakfast I dident lile the smell of the rooms. Too humid.
The rooftop pool and lounge. the views were great. how small the business center was.
