Central location, comfort and beautiful colonial interiors
There was mold on the ceiling of the marble shower due to poor ventilation. While they moved us into another room, one of the attendants commented, "hundreds of our rooms look like that." Not a good state for a 5 star resort.
Lobby entrance and Bar. Gardens are lovely and one can stroll into town by way of the University park right across the hotel entrance.
Location and grounds are spectacular, as is the breakfast buffet. Late night noise issues from bar and terrace area kept us awake and even awakened us from a sound sleep one evening. Required repeated calls to front desk to resolve. Bathroom lights also miswired and require turning on room lights which is problematic when companion is sleeping. Overall, it's a very nice hotel with very major flaws.
We enjoyed everything. Byron was extremely helpful and gave us spectacular service. High tea was lovely and the staff friendly as well as efficient and courteous. The grounds and building are simply beautiful
The staff was incredibly helpful and gracious - really set the tone for a lovely stay in Cape Town. The decor was very nice, the hotel was immaculately clean, the food delicious, and the entire place was quiet, warm, and extremely comfortable. Perfect! No. Everything was even nicer than we expected. I was slightly surprised by having to be let into the hotel by the staff instead of having my own key to the outside door, but that was never a problem and made things feel even more secure.
The location was ideal; near enough to enjoy all the centre of Cape Town, but just slightly away to have a restful stay.nI also liked the fact that they have a fullly functioning PC in each room with free internet access. The rooms are very stylish and the large table, kitchenette and soft seating make them great spaces for use if you are sharing a room with a partner of friend. They do not serve breakkfast.
Location was great. Staff was very nice and accomodating. The rooms are good sized. The water in the sink would not go down and the legs of one of the chairs in living room was broken
Good location on quiet street (a little noise from bar downstair but disappears early). Good Internet. Wonderful staff. Private parking with gate. Room is nice.
I liked the location and the facility. The hotel was in a good location to tour the city and to experience table mountain. I did not like the noise. Bars along the street were noisy and the parking lot right outside your windows meant you were awoken every each morning. Also the cab they arranged for me tried to charge me twice the meter rate to take a trip to the airport. I refused to pay and had to find another ride.
The front desk staff were absolutely extraordinary. They could not have been more accommodating. My room was directly behind reception and I found it noisy. The level of amenities in the room fluctuated. Once inconsistencies were identified, they were dealt with promptly.
From the moment we arrived the reception staff made us feel that nothing was too much trouble. They were warm, humourous, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. The room was spacious, comfortbale and well equipped.
We stayed twice at the Hippo Boutique Hotel. Both rooms were very stylistic; it felt like we were staying in a museum (which we enjoyed). The hotel is modern, safe, and clean. The first room had mold in the shower; nothing major, but it definitely detracted from the otherwise modern feel. The second room was almost perfect, but the shower ran out of hot water after the first shower. Overall, however, we very much enjoyed our stay; we did not have to worry about safety, and we enjoyed the modern and generally clean amenities.
Very helpful staff
staff very friendly and helpful, rooms spacious, it is in a good location with a choice of places to eat. Would recommend anyone to stay here
Helpful and friendly staff. Good location and just walking distance to shopping, bars, restaurants.
A modern room with functionality and above average amenities. Gym is large and modern but could use some more equipment, as it has lots of empty space.
Great Service and quirky, interesting facilities. Comfortable rooms as well. Great location and easily accesible. Because of the growth of the hotel, there was drilling on a few of the mornings we were there. This was the only complaint we had and even then, it wasn't a major one/
Great hotel, great location, great staff just perfect!
All of your staff were very friendly, cheerful, and helpful. The rooms were a good blend of funky and functional. The location was great especially for driving to city attraftions and walking to nightlife. thanks! One minor thing - the lifts were pretty erratic!
Great location for everything in the city. Comfortable, nice staff and good breakfasts that set you up for a days exploring. Hotel located up a very steep hill, so people less mobile might not manage to walk this. The hotel was very very busy during my stay and there was not enough seating in the general reception area at times. Also during these times the elevators were not too reliable. Finally, twice I had to walk all the way back to reception because my card key did not work.
The staff were super friendly, the ambience was funky, and the overall experience was just fantastic. I would absolutely stay here again.
The international electric plug was a great touch.
nothing the room, toilet did not work fittings in shower fell off the wall!
Architecture which lifts Fire & Ice over the standard pulp... :) They don't actually have twin rooms. Rooms are small and even smaller when they make twin form double... for one person rooms are ok.
Loved the old floors, feels comfortable and relaxed. Everything you could need is within walking distance. Beautiful crisp white bedding set against the old furniture is rooms, rustic and lovely. Whole atmosphere of hotel is relaxed and comfortable.
Good hospitality. Good location The sheets on my bed were old and stained.Cleanliness of bathroom .breakfast is not so good .cats in the kitchen!!
I liked the staff (very kind), the quality of the room, the proximity to long street, but being quite and the price
Friendly hotel close to restaurants and bars but still with a quiet location. Period feel and generously proportioned room. Well stocked and cheap mini bar. Room had a safe. Hotel had a slightly faded feel and some of the facilities are in need of updating.
Good hospitality. Good location. Clean rooms. Loved the cats.
nothing , and it not respect the picture showed on web site and expencive for that they offer . the disorganizzation of reception , due too the weren't be hable to make transaction about visa circuit , after leave the hote l they request me to make a paimant or send them the deatils of another credit card ,,,, and not only one time , so i lost two hours of my time to go direcly to bank to pay the price of room , so negative experience , i dont recommend this hotel .
Comfortable room with very adequate facilities, good location esp. for Table Mountain and V&A Waterfront, excellent service by owner and all other staff.
I slepy superbly. The place is a quiet oasis in the middle of Cape Town and the bed is really 5star, flat and comfortable, the linen best percale. And the staff charming and very helpful nothing
The free wireless internet is fast and good; it is very close to Kloof Street which is great; the parking is good; the one staff member I met was friendly and helpful. The entrance is through a shabby verandah, where ashtrays overflow and dirty tablecloths flap in the wind. The sheets on my bed were old and stained. The entire room was decorated in junk-shop style. A refrigerator outside my door kept me awake late into the night. My room was next door to the dining hall so I was woken early by the noise of the staff loudly calling to each other. The walls are thin. The whole place feels like a hospital. It is definitely not worth R400 a night even in season.
The hotel is well located. The whole place seems to lack a bit of TLC. A lampshade was missing in my room, nobody had swept under the bed for days and the wardrobe was damaged. A failed lightbulb had not been replaced. More care needed generally, especially at R680 a night. The advertised mountain view - actually Signal Hill - would have been fine "if it wasn't for the buildings in between"!
Very friendly welcoming owner and staff, excellent food and accommodation with helpful advice regarding tourist information stayed in winter-room heating not very effective
Very comfortable, excellent friendly staff who were always helpful. Great location near the city centre at the bottom of Table Mountain.
I loved the fac that the owner and staff were very friendly and they made your stay with them more personal and the place was always kept extremely clean.
Cleanliness was to a very high standard. All staff were very helpful. Honesty bar / fridge was a very good idea. Perfect location for Cape mountain.
Good service and very nice staff
The room had no tea and coffee making facilities. The Chef was very rude and not prepared to make a sandwich at 9.15pm because dinner was over. The room was very noisy. The intern manager a very nice dutch guy went to make a cheese sandwich for my daughter and husband,he at least knew what good service was all about.Value for a family room , far too expensive.
The location and breakfast were good for the price. The room was very simple and very noisy. We must have had the worst room in the place as our window opened onto the AC units for several rooms and just walls on all sides. We were also right at the start of the corridor and could hear every word as people streamed in throughout the night. If I ever return to Cape Town, I will look for somewhere else to stay, although it worked out fine for this trip.
Aircon Difficult to wash hands in the basin.
Value for money
I was very surprised. For the price we paid I thought we would get a lot less, but this was great! N/A
The location of the hotel is amazing - we felt safe and happy to go out in the local area at night to the nearby bars and restaurants. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we liked that free tea and coffee was provided all day long, even though there was no kettle in the room. Rooms were very basic, but the value for money was fantastic so no complaints there! We only used the swimming pool once - it's small and freezing but nice for relaxing on a sunny day. Not really the fault of the hotel but other guests tended to be very noisy - we were woken up most nights at midnight-ish by people coming home and again between 6 - 7am when people got up...I think the walls are pretty thin! The internet was very expensive - far cheaper to head onto Kloof Street to the internet cafe.
When I arrived at 12, my room was not going to be ready until 2. The staff did not offer to help me with luggage, and did not tell me there was protected parking under the hotel. I had a very large bag, and because there is no elevator I opted to leave it in my car... BAD idea. The first night my back window was smashed in and my whole bag was stolen. I feel if the staff had been more helpful, my car and luggage would have been secure.
meals Lack of communication. For example, if something is not right in the room/ licking. the staff should ensure that they inform the client even before the fault is discovered by the client.
Hairs in the bed. Torn curtains. Had to pay more for parking than mentioned in your website.
Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful and its proximity to the city centre and areas we were visiting was excellent. Any problems we had with the room were not fixed ie. none of the sockets worked, we said it to a few of the staff and they did not try to fix it therfore we could not use our camera or phone chargers or other electrical items.
